ND400 Filter

An ND 400 filter enables you to compose long exposure images during normal daylight.
The image below is a 30 second exposure at f/22 with a Canon EOS 5DS R using a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens and ND400 lens. Daylight shots like this are also enhanced by using a circular polarizer as well. In this case it really separates the clouds from the sky and gives the sky a deeper color.

How to photograph fast moving objects

The best way to photograph fast moving objects is to line them up down range and track them (follow with your camera) as they come towards you. Ideally you want to shoot manual with a shallow depth of field at a fast time (i.e. 1/250 or faster)

As you can see below, I have attached images I took of a Navy Blue Angels Show. These were shot at f/5.6 at 1/250 with a burst of 5 shots per second using a Canon 5D Mark III with a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens set at 200mm.

Star photography requires an area with dark skies with near zero light pollution. High elevation, (above 5000 feet elevation), and less than half of a full moon. Although the lower the light, the more visible the stars, some moon light enables the composition of a good photograph.

Stars will start to show movement in about 30 seconds. Given that, you'll need a digital camera with at lease a f/4.0 lens and and ISO of 4000 or better to capture stars without movement.

Figure 1 was captured with my Canon 5DSR at ISO 6400 with a Canon TS-E 24mm, f/3.5,  and 15 second exposure. This short exposure setting captures the stars without movement. Notice the milky way in the center of the photo.

Figure 2was captured with my Canon 5DSR at ISO 100 with a Canon TS-E 24mm, f/8,  and 30 minute exposure. The 30 minute exposure creates star trails as the earth turns which changes the relative position of the stars leaving a trail for each star. The blue in the sky comes from the moon light of a third quarter moon (half full).

Canon TS-E 24mm 1:3.5 L II Lens

I recently purchased the Canon EOS 5DS R 50MP camera. Since I also shoot with a 4x5 view camera, I decided to try the Canon TS-E 24mm 1:3.5 L II to see if I could emulate the Tilt/Shift movements. 

Albeit 50MP is not quite 4x5 sheet film detail, it is enough to consider as a replacement.
The Canon TS-E 24mm lens enables you to execute view camera like movements

In figure 1 you see the normal distortion common to a wide angle lens.

In Figure 2, I used the TS-E 24mm to perform a rise movement to remove the distortion

Triton Museum in Santa Clara (April 16 - June 23, 2013)

Roosevelt Bynum Photography will be on exhibit at the Triton Museum in Santa Clara (April 16 - June 23, 2013) in the 2013 Photo Competition & Exibition.

Since I use a 4x5 view camera, these images are printed large and the detail will appear as though you're looking out thw window experiencing the scene first hand.

Sunnyvale Art Club Presentation

I had the pleasure of being the featured speaker at the Sunnyvale Art Club http://www.sunnyvaleartists.org/nextmeetig.html Thursday 2-19-2009. The place was packed and I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm. What I've discovered is that most art clubs focus around painters, most of the demonstrator topics are related to different paint media. Although, the concept of "Photography as Art" is relatively young, 50+ years, there's still significant interest in this art. The few times I've presented at art clubs, the attendance has been much higher than normal.

As an experienced film photographer, I'm a dying breed! I want to continue to be the catalyst to revive the enthusiasm of this wonder wonderful art form. So all you art clubs out there feel free to contact me to work with your group. robynum@comcast.net

Sleeping in Seattle

I spent the a week in Seattle, Washington, the Emerald City. This trip was not only my first trip to Seattle, but also my first Amtrak travel experience. The Amtrak Coast Starlight is a Superliner train that runs from Los Angles, CA to Seattle, WA. If you plan your trip properly, you can reserve first class accommodations for the same as coach airfare, but you can’t be in a hurry. The trip from San Jose, CA to Seattle, WA took 24 hours, (Friday night 8:39 pm to Saturday night 8:30 pm)

Seattle is a thriving modern city with an immense amount of history in many areas. It was a city known for hot Jazz Clubs in the 50’s. Both Jimmy Hendricks and Kurt Cobain are both from there.

Seattle has the oldest active farmers market (105 years) in the nation. Both Starbucks (notice the original seal) and Nordstom original stores started in Seattle. The ships on popular show on the Discovery Channel called The Deadliest Catch are all based in Seattle and there is a memorial at the dock for all those lost at sea. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (Ballard Locks) which allows vessels to pass from the freshwater lakes to Puget Sound handles more ships, boats and barges than the Panama Canal on an annual basis. We were fortunate enough to see it in action. This same canal is the route traveled by thousands of salmon to their birth place to procreate.

The city really had its boom and exploding population growth during the Klondike gold rush to Alaska. People came to Seattle thinking that Alaska was just a few more days travel. As a result, lots of people died on the way across Canada to Alaska, but the economy of Seattle grew 300%.

Although Seattle has a rainy reputation, it's an interesting city for a relaxing vacation.

Almaden Art and Wine Festival

The Fine Art of Roosevelt Bynum Photography was available at the Taste of Saratoga, Saratoga, CA and the Almaden Art and Wine Festival in the Almaden Valley of San Jose, CA. I'm pleased to report that I received the Third Place award for "Excellence Achived in Photography".

Saturday September 20, 2008 was a beautiful day for the 1st Taste of Saratoga and several clients were excited to take home pieces of my work.

Sunday September 21, 2008 was the Almaden Art and Wine Festival and another gorgeous day in San Jose. The festival was the largest in recent years with about 125 vendors with various forms of art, jewelry, clothing and various accessories. The event was well attended, very organized, the people were wonderful, and all my neighboring vendors helpful and supportive.

The most popular piece amongst the guests that visited my booth this weekend was Poipu Beach which was displayed in my booth as a 4' x 3' vinyl print.

Overall, it was a very rewarding weekend the the Art Festivals.

Moon Over My House

Moon Over My House is a composition created with my Mamiya 645 Pro using Kodak 100VS film. It was a full moon night and the sky was clear. I used a 55mm lens to do the base shot. without advancing the film, I replaced the 55MM with a 300mm lens to shoot the moon. The base shot was a 2 minute exposure at f/8, while the moon shot was 1/125 second at f/8.

The full moon is actually 1/12 the light of the sun which makes it rather bright in the night sky. If you compose a shot of the moon alone such that the result captures the detail of the moon surface, everything else will be dark. Whenever you see a high quality composition like this with the moon with surface detail, it will be double exposure.

Moon Over My House is on display in the UArt Open Exhibition at University Art in San Jose. It was one of two photographs in 50 pieces accepted from 300 submissions.
